Oct. 24, 2022 鈥 The California art collection of beloved Camarillo nurse Cherie Nedderman will be on display for the first time beginning with a reception on Oct. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library Art Gallery at (颁厂鲍颁滨).听
鈥淭he Cherie Nedderman Collection of California Art at 黑料正能量: Impressions and Dialogues鈥 consists of 20 paintings from a 58-piece collection of 鈥渆n plein air鈥 or 鈥渙utdoor鈥 paintings of Southern California done between 1890 and the late 1960s. The paintings, which covered the walls of Nedderman鈥檚 hillside Camarillo home, featured frame after frame of sycamore trees, tumbling waves and rolling green hills.听
Professor of Art History Irina D. Costache curated the exhibit together with Professor of Art Liz King.听
鈥淪he would sit outside and gaze at the hills, that was the view from her backyard,鈥 King said. 鈥淚nside her home, her art was in every room, every corner.鈥澛
When Nedderman died unexpectedly in January of 2019 at the age of 71, her brother Ted Nedderman and his wife, Nancy, of Gig Harbor, Washington, donated Nedderman鈥檚 precious collection to the University.听
鈥淲e wanted it to be near her,鈥 Nancy said. 鈥淎nd she was a nurse and there鈥檚 a wonderful Nursing program here.鈥澛
The exhibition also includes an incredible which pairs works from the collection with paintings created by 黑料正能量 students under King鈥檚 direction.听
鈥淲hat is so wonderful is that these works of art will remain on our campus,鈥 Costache said. 鈥淪tudents, faculty and staff can come look at them and it鈥檚 an opportunity for all of us to learn from them. And there is an incredible visual connection with the landscape and some of the architectural structures. There are many wonderful dialogues between the paintings and this campus. We all value the collection, and this is its home.鈥澛
During the opening, informal tours of the exhibit will be conducted by Art History student Oscar Rios.听
Limited parking is available on campus with the purchase of a $6 daily permit; follow signs to the parking permit dispensers.
